CDA 12-A is a completely denatured alcohol commonly used for extracting CBD and other desirable compounds from hemp biomass. The heptane-based formulation combines high-purity ethanol with approximately 5% n-heptane, providing strong solvency for cannabinoids while supporting efficient cold extraction and winterization. When used at low temperatures, CDA 12-A can help reduce the co-extraction of chlorophyll, waxes, fats, and other unwanted plant components, resulting in a cleaner crude extract and simplifying downstream filtration and refinement. Under the federal formula, CDA 12-A is produced by adding five gallons of heptane—or alternatively toluene—to every 100 gallons of ethanol of at least 185 proof; processors purchasing it for hemp extraction should therefore confirm that they are receiving the heptane-based formulation.
Because CDA 12-A is denatured, it is intended strictly for industrial processing and is not suitable for direct use in food, beverages, tinctures, pharmaceuticals, or finished consumer products. Both ethanol and heptane must be thoroughly recovered from the CBD extract using properly designed evaporation and solvent-recovery equipment. The finished material should undergo validated residual-solvent testing to confirm compliance with all applicable federal, state, and product-specific limits. CDA 12-A is also highly flammable and should be handled only in appropriately ventilated, electrically classified facilities using grounded equipment, suitable personal protective equipment, and procedures consistent with the product’s Safety Data Sheet.
