Heptane and n-Heptane

High-purity heptane and n-heptane for extraction, crystallization, purification and industrial processing.

Heptane and n-Heptane

Heptane and n-heptane are nonpolar hydrocarbon solvents commonly used during the purification and crystallization stages of CBD isolate production. After cannabinoids have been extracted and the CBD-rich material has undergone appropriate refinement and distillation, heptane can be used to dissolve the concentrate and support controlled crystallization. As the solution becomes supersaturated, CBD molecules form crystals while many oils, pigments, minor cannabinoids, and other impurities remain in the liquid phase. Repeated recrystallization and filtration may be used to improve the isolate’s purity, color, and consistency. In commercial terminology, “heptane” may refer to a mixture containing multiple heptane isomers, while n-heptane is the specific straight-chain compound and is often selected when tighter purity and process consistency are required.

The solvent’s purity, moisture content, evaporation profile, and contaminant specifications can directly affect crystallization performance and final-product quality. After filtration, the CBD crystals must be thoroughly dried using properly designed solvent-recovery equipment, and the finished isolate should be tested for residual solvents, cannabinoid potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and other applicable contaminants. Heptane and n-heptane are highly flammable, can produce hazardous vapor concentrations, and may present an aspiration hazard, so they should be handled only in properly ventilated, grounded, and electrically classified processing areas. Manufacturers should use compatible equipment, appropriate personal protective equipment, documented operating procedures, and the solvent grade required for their process and finished-product standards.
