Ethanol 200 Proof GNS
200 Proof Ethanol GNS, commonly called Grain Neutral Spirits, is a high-purity, essentially anhydrous ethyl alcohol containing approximately 100% ethanol with minimal water. In the CBD industry, it is widely used as an extraction and processing solvent because it efficiently dissolves cannabinoids, terpenes, and other desirable compounds from hemp biomass. When used in chilled or cryogenic extraction systems, it can help limit the extraction of chlorophyll, waxes, fats, and other unwanted plant materials, producing a cleaner crude extract and reducing downstream filtration and refinement. Its very low water content also supports consistent processing, efficient solvent recovery, and applications such as winterization, equipment cleaning, and the preparation of hemp-derived formulations where a non-denatured, food-compatible alcohol is required.
Following extraction, the ethanol must be thoroughly recovered using properly designed evaporation or distillation equipment, and the resulting CBD extract should be tested for residual solvents, cannabinoid content, contaminants, and compliance with applicable product standards. Although GNS is potable-grade alcohol, its purchase, storage, handling, recovery, and use may be subject to federal and state permits, excise taxes, fire codes, and facility requirements. Because 200 Proof ethanol is highly flammable and readily absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, it should be stored in tightly sealed containers and handled in properly ventilated, grounded, and electrically classified processing areas using suitable personal protective equipment.
