Pentane and n-Pentane
Pentane and n-pentane are highly volatile, nonpolar hydrocarbon solvents used in cannabis and hemp processing, particularly during extraction, refinement, separation, and cannabinoid crystallization. They are effective at dissolving cannabinoids, terpenes, oils, and other nonpolar compounds while having limited affinity for water-soluble plant components. Their low boiling points allow relatively rapid evaporation and solvent recovery at lower temperatures, which can help reduce prolonged heat exposure during processing. Pentane may refer to a commercial blend containing multiple pentane isomers, while n-pentane is the specific straight-chain compound and may be preferred when consistent purity, boiling characteristics, and process performance are required. In CBD manufacturing, these solvents may also be used during recrystallization and isolate production to help separate purified CBD crystals from oils, pigments, minor cannabinoids, and other impurities.
Because pentane and n-pentane evaporate extremely quickly, they can create flammable vapor concentrations and present a serious fire or explosion hazard if handled improperly. Processing should occur only in properly designed, ventilated, grounded, and electrically classified facilities using closed-loop or otherwise suitable solvent-handling and recovery equipment. The solvent must be thoroughly removed from the finished extract, distillate, or isolate, and the final product should be tested for residual solvents, potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and other applicable contaminants. Manufacturers should select the appropriate solvent grade and verify its purity, isomer composition, moisture content, residue specifications, equipment compatibility, and compliance with all applicable cannabis, hemp, workplace, fire, and environmental regulations.
